Industrial Vauxhall workers back deal – paving way for new van model

VAUXHALL workers in Luton backed a pay deal today that paves the way for the plant to produce a new model of van.

A ballot of Unite union members at the factory gave 68 per cent backing to the deal, which Unite said was worth £750, plus a 1.5 per cent rise rise next January.

Vauxhall is owned by French firm PSA, which manufactures Peugeot vehicles.

Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said: “Our Vauxhall members have voted in considerable numbers to accept the pay deal, which is great news and means we can now focus on bringing the new vehicle and up to 450 jobs to Luton.”

But there are still fears for jobs at Vauxhall’s plant at Ellesmere Port in Cheshire.

“I urge PSA to note once again the positive spirit and commitment of our members at Vauxhall and to move forward with investment now in Ellesmere Port,” said Mr McCluskey.
