THE International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) welcomed “the very first strike among workers’ unions in the digital-born media industry” today.
Journalists at the Thrillist, a New York-based food and culture digital magazine, voted to strike on Monday to demand a living wage following “a year of frustrating contract negotiations” with Thrillist owner Group Nine Media.
The editorial staff formed a union in February and say the company has since waged a campaign against organised labour, but 80 per cent of staff joined and union members voted 91 per cent for a strike this week at the New York offices of the Writers Guild of America East.
IFJ president Philippe Leruth said: “It is encouraging to see union members in the digital-born media taking a step forward, putting real pressure on the company’s management to support ongoing negotiations.
“Digital media workers need a common voice and strong unions.”
