100 Palestinians arrested during the start of Ramadan

ISRAEL has arrested at least 100 Palestinians, including 18 children, during the first 10 days of Ramadan, a human rights group declared today.

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Centre for Studies said that Israel security forces had raided homes in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, dragging civilians out of their homes.

Nine-year-old Mousa Ramadan was arrested at a military checkpoint on Hebron Street and 13-year-old twin brothers were detained after soldiers stormed their house in the village of Kafr Ni’ma, west of Ramallah.

Israel arrested 905 Palestinians in March and April, bringing the total behind bars to 5,700.

The Palestinian Prisoners Club has warned that it is the worst period it has known for Palestinians, with more than 500 held under administrative detention, meaning they can be held indefinitely without trial.

A report revealed in April that Israel has jailed more than 50,000 Palestinian children since 1967.

Almost 17,000 of those arrested were detained in the years since the start of Al-Aqsa Intifada in 2000.

The Prisoners’ and Freed Prisoners’ Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation reported to the European Union that the detention of Palestinian children is practised “systematically” by the Israeli authorities.

Palestinians have called on international organisations to refuse donations from accommodation website Airbnb over its reversal of a decision to delist properties for rent in the occupied territories.

A joint statement said: “Airbnb donations effectively amounts to the proceeds of crime and will be amassed by the illegal policies and practices we seek to end.

“We call on all international and local NGOs to reject donations of money from Airbnb, until their policies ensure respect for the human rights of all people, including those living under occupation.

“Together, we must all work to end corporate complicity in human rights abuses; companies like Airbnb must know that our silence cannot be bought.”
