PEACE campaigners urged the government today to reject a “shocking” call for the return of the use of cluster bombs.
The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) has suggested that Britain should consider withdrawing from the Oslo Convention, which bans such weapons
Cluster munitions scatter “bomblets” across wide areas, often leading to high numbers of civilian casualties.
RUSI claimed that British forces have “a critical shortage of artillery” that could be a disadvantage in a war with Russia.
The Peace Pledge Union (PPU) pointed out that the defence and security think tank receives substantial finding from arms companies such as BAE Systems and Northrop Grumman.
Britain already has the seventh-highest military spending in the world.
PPU campaigns manager Symon Hill said the call was “shocking” and a “backward move.”
He said: “Military spending needs to be cut, not increased.
"The build-up of weapons by both Russian and Nato forces only serves to make war more likely while diverting money from tackling real threats such as climate change and poverty.”
