Centre for Political Beauty apologises for insensitive use of Holocaust victims' remains

GERMAN artists’ collective the Centre for Political Beauty today covered up an urn it had set up outside the Reichstag containing the remains of Holocaust victims.

The group apologised for offending “Jewish institutions, associations and individuals” with the insensitive stunt, which had been intended as a warning against the growth of the far right in Germany and how conservative politicians had paved Hitler’s way to power in the 1930s.

“We want to apologise especially ... to individuals who see our work as disturbing or touching the peace of the dead according to Jewish religious law,” it stated on its website.

The group has pulled a series of controversial pranks aimed at embarrassing Germany’s far-right AfD party, such as setting up a miniature Holocaust memorial in a rented garden opposite the home of AfD politician Bjorn Hoecke, who had criticised the decision to erect what he called a “monument of shame” in Berlin in the first place.

Six million Jews were murdered by nazi Germany during the Holocaust in specialist death camps like Auschwitz, as well as in massacres in many parts of occupied Europe. The Centre for Political Beauty said it had unearthed the remains from soil in Germany, Poland and Ukraine.
