GREECE: Police arrested dozens of trade unionists and anti-capitalists yesterday as they gathered to commemorate Alexis Grigoropoulos, the 15-year-old shot dead by police in 2008, sparking riots.
Lawyers including Thanasis Kampagiannis, who acted for Golden Dawn’s victims in the recent case that found the neonazi party to be a criminal organisation, were among the detained.
Police also seized and destroyed flowers laid on Grigoropoulos’s grave. The crackdown was officially on public health grounds.
PALESTINE: Israeli authorities have cleared police of wrongdoing in the case of a nine-year-old Palestinian boy who lost an eye after being shot in the face.
Witnesses say Malik Eissa was hit in the face by a sponge-tipped munition after getting off a school bus.
Israeli police say they opened fire when attacked by stone-throwers while conducting an arrest in East Jerusalem.
The Israeli Justice Ministry said the incident was “sad” but there were insufficient grounds for prosecution.
UNITED STATES: The New York church that houses the Liberty Bell has been gutted in a fire that spread from a nearby block of flats.
The church, built in 1892, houses the Liberty Bell that pealed to mark the declaration of independence in 1776 and is tolled for the inaugurations and deaths of presidents.
The state of the bell was still unclear last night.
INDONESIA: Social Affairs Minister Juliari Batubara handed himself in to the Corruption Eradication Commission yesterday on corruption charges related to coronavirus relief contracts.
He is accused of taking 17 billion rupiah (£900,000) from supplier companies distributing food aid.
