Children suffer by shortage of BME teachers, says NUT

A SHORTAGE of black teachers is leading to a lack of role models for children from all backgrounds, the NUT conference heard yesterday.

More than 14 per cent of the British population are from black and minority ethnic (BME) communities but BME school teachers represent just half this figure.

“We want our classrooms to reflect society,” said NUT general secretary Christine Blower.
