CHILEAN President Michelle Bachelet announced on Tuesday that a citizen-driven process would begin in September to create a new constitution.
“We will begin a process in September, the Chilean month, through dialogues, debate, consultations and councils that will lead to the new fundamental, fully democratic and civic charter that we all deserve,” she said in a broadcast on state radio and television.
Her naming of September as Chile’s month refers to the annual patriotic “fiestas patrias” celebrations that take place then.
The current constitution dates back to 1981 and the US-supported military dictatorship headed by General Augusto Pinochet.
Former radical student leader and current Communist MP Camila Vallejo urged her fellow Chileans to take part in the process.
“It is the task of all who want profound transformation,” she tweeted.
Overhauling the constitution was a key pledge of Ms Bachelet’s re-election campaign.
