Clough admits mistakes were of his own making

2 Watford 0 Burton Albion by Samantha Miller at Vicarage Road

BURTON boss Nigel Clough took responsibility for the Championship side’s FA cup defeat to Wat ford on Saturday afternoon.

“Just after the second half was the key period. We started off with the wrong formation, which was my fault early on, but we changed it after 25 minutes. Unfortunately we were 1-0 down by then.

“Once we changed it to a back four we were much better, much more competitive. There were too many spaces with a back three early on. ”

Watford needed a win to gain some confidence after a five-game winless streak. Jerome Sinclair took his opportunity in front of Watford manager Walter Mazzarri with a well-taken individual effort, which ended up in the back of the net for the second goal.

Sinclair made his Liverpool debut at the age of 16 with bags of potential but has struggled to catch the eye of his boss since joining the club on a five year deal.

Mazzarri said: “I saw him in today’s first half and also the game against Stoke, he’s a player that needed this goal in order for him to unlock himself. Hopefully he can be the Sinclair that I always see in training and he managed to score a great goal today”.

Young academy graduate Brandon Mason also found himself starting for the Hornets for the first time, providing a low cross that Christian Kabasele was able to tap in to put the Hornets one up.

His manager was full of praise: “Sometimes it’s fundamental to see what we’ve got at home, so that we can grow these players and don’t always have to go abroad to sign players for crazy amount of money,” he said.

Walters urged his players to turn their focus to the league for their next game against Middlesborough. They will be looking to gain some momentum from the cup win and gain belief to take into the league to turn things around and climb up the table.
