The key to Leyton Orient beating the drop is to not scout opposition and focus on themselves, according to Paul McCallum on Saturday.
The midfielder pegged a goal back for the hosts a minute after Jon Stead had put County 2-0 up just after the interval, Jorge Grant taking advantage of some poor defending to gift the visitors the lead 10 minutes before the break.
Teddy Mezague thought he had salvaged a point for Orient in the 81st minute only for County to once again capitalise on some poor defending, Stead securing all three points with six minutes to go.
New manager Danny Webb has galvanised the dressing room since his arrival last month but the revelation that the team no longer do homework on the teams they are set to face may be a cause for concern for fans.
Football clubs often do extensive research on the opposition in the build-up to games, employing scouts whose sole job will be to travel the country and scout other teams, in order to work out their strengths and weaknesses and come up with detailed gameplans as to work out the best way to secure three points.
However, McCallum stood by his manager, arguing that time should be spent improving themselves and not watching other players.
“We’ve stopped watching videos of the other team, which I believe is the right thing to do,” said McCallum. “Everyone in this league is the same really, bar a few, so we know what we will get every week.
“During the week it’s about what we do and how we will win the game and affect the game, rather than focusing on what they are going to do to us.”
O’s fans will be pleased to hear the dressing room believe that they will avoid relegation out of the Football League, with McCallum saying: “There’s still 14 games to go and the next four or five games are against teams around us and it is important that we still believe and fight for every point.
“We still believe and are confident that we can stay up.”
