FOOTBALL: Ryan Giggs has vowed to put a smile back on the faces of Manchester United fans.

Giggs was appointed interim player-manager on Tuesday following the sacking of David Moyes.

“It’s a proud moment for me to manage Manchester United and it’s one I will enjoy,” said Giggs, who will take his place in the dugout for the first time against Norwich tonight.

“I want to bring back some smiles on the faces of the fans.”

RUGBY: Jonny Wilkinson boasts the natural instincts to launch a stellar coaching career, according to Toulon team-mate Carl Hayman.

England World Cup winner Wilkinson is primed to retire this summer after 17 years of top-level rugby and could move straight into Toulon’s backroom staff as kicking coach.

“Somewhere down the track I think he’d make a great coach,” said Hayman.

FOOTBALL: Former Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has died of throat cancer at the age of 45.

Vilanova led the Catalan club for a season after taking over from Pep Guardiola but was forced to resign last summer because of ill health.

Barca said in a statement: “The club expresses their deepest condolences over the passing of Tito Vilanova, who died today in Barcelona at the age of 45.”

SWIMMING: There was home success on the opening day of the FINA Diving World Series at the London Aquatics Centre yesterday as Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow took the silver medal in the 10 metre synchronised platform event.

The duo had finished fifth in the same discipline at the London 2012 Olympics but improved on that in the first diving event to take place at the venue since the end of the Games.
