EU urged to halt talks with Turkey

THE European Parliament urged the EU to halt membership talks with Ankara yesterday — a day after Turkish police arrested Amnesty International’s director and other staff.

MEPs voted 477-64 with 97 abstentions to approve a non-binding report recommending the suspension of the negotiations over April’s referendum giving the president sweeping new powers.

Turkish Europe minister Omer Celik slammed the report as “geared toward sabotaging relations.”
