Chinese president warns Asia against 'unhelpful' alliances

CHINESE President Xi Jinping warned Asian nations today that building military alliances to counter China would not benefit regional security.

But he also pledged to peacefully resolve the territorial disputes that have intensified in recent years in the South and East China Seas.

During a visit to Asia last month, US President Barack Obama told Japan and the Philippines that his strategic shift towards Asia — widely seen as aimed at countering China’s rising influence — was real.

Mr Xi made his remarks at a regional conference in Shanghai in front of Vietnamese Vice-President Nguyen Thi Doan and representatives from the Philippines, Japan and more than 40 other countries and organisations.

He did not mention the United States directly, but the inference was clear.

Mr Xi sought to play down concerns about China’s intentions.

“China stays committed to seeking peaceful settlement of disputes with other countries over territorial sovereignty and maritime rights,” he said.
