EU warns Turkey that it is edging further away from democracy
TURKISH President Recep Tayyip Erdogan challenged the EU yesterday to put up or shut up on Ankara’s bid for membership of the bloc.
Mr Erdogan threw a tantrum after an EU report out yesterday highlighted Ankara’s increasing slide away from democratic government.
It followed Turkey’s recent clampdown on media freedoms, the arrests of 10 pro-Kurdish HDP party MPs and parliamentary moves to reinstate the death penalty.
