Myanmar: Government criticises UN inquiry into rights abuses

MYANMAR security adviser Thaung Tun warned yesterday that the UN human rights council’s decision to have an international mission probe human rights abuses is unwanted and unconstructive.

He said that investigating the security forces’ role in Rakhine state failed to appreciate Myanmar’s efforts to deal with the situation and address its root causes. Soldiers and police launched operations in Rakhine in October after shadowy insurgents killed nine border guards.

Government forces were accused of perpetrating rape, torture and other abuses against residents of the Muslim Rohingya minority during their sweeps.
