Boy’s death leads shop chain to axe display units

TOPSHOP has recalled its till display units after one landed on a schoolboy who died in hospital hours later, it was revealed yesterday.

Ten-year-old Kaden Reddick from Reading suffered serious head injuries at the store in the town’s Oracle shopping centre on Monday.

Thames Valley Police Detective Superintendent Paul Hayles said his team was investigating with health and safety officers from Reading Borough Council.

Hilder Palmer of the Hazards campaign group said shops are classed as “low risk” and would rarely be inspected for health and safety unless there was a complaint or incident.

She told the Star: “People should be completely safe when shopping. Generally, regulations and enforcement in every area of health and safety have been attacked and downgraded with cut local authority budgets.”
