Tories raise twice as much as Labour for general election

THE TORIES have raked in double the cash raised by Labour as donations pour in from their privileged pals ahead of the general election, figures revealed yesterday.

According to the Electoral Commission, more than £7 million has been chucked at the Tory campaign in the last quarter alone as Britain’s richest fight to keep their party in power.

What Self-Made Millionnaires Really Think author Barry Pettman was one of two wealthy individuals to handover £500,000 each.

Labour was boosted by a £683,000 payment from public-sector union Unison, but added just £3,762,000 to the election war chest between April and June 2014.

Shadow cabinet office minister John Ashworth accused Prime Minister David Cameron of trying to “buy the next election.

“When millions are flowing in from hedge funds and exclusive groups of donors, is it any wonder David Cameron stands up for the privileged few?” he asked.

“Millionaires and hedge funds have been given a tax cut while hardworking families suffer from a cost-of-living crisis.”

The donations were revealed a week after Prime Minister David Cameron sparked a new cash for honours scandal by handing peerages to Tory donors.

Financier and Tory party co-treasurer Michael Farmer gave £333,500 to Mr Cameron’s campaign to stay in Downing Street, the Commission figures show.

But the commission’s figures also showed that Tory finances had been damaged as donors defected to right-wing rival Ukip.

Nigel Farage’s ultraconservative party landed the single largest donation in the last quarter — £1,079,567 from the Highstone Group, owned by ex-Tory donor Paul Sykes.
