Gallery staff link action with council workers

STRIKERS defending their jobs from privatisation at the National Gallery are to join workers from two London borough councils at a rally in Parliament Square on Budget Day.

Members of the civil servants’ union PCS have staged more than 30 days of strike action since February against plans to “outsource” 400 of the National Gallery’s 600 jobs to privateers.

This week public service workers employed by the London borough councils of Bromley and Barnet will also strike against privatisation of their jobs.

Bromley council workers will walk out for 48 hours tomorrow. Barnet council workers will strike for 24 hours on Wednesday.

The rally will take place as Chancellor George Osborne delivers his “emergency” budget, which is expected to include a further £3.3 billion cut in government funding for local authorities.

General union Unite is urging the public to support Wednesday’s rally at 1pm.
