IT IS popular sovereignty rather than Parliament’s that is at risk in the debate over leaving the European Union, the Communist Party warned at the weekend.
The party spoke out as investment banker Gina Miller — who brought the High Court case that ruled Parliament must vote on invoking Article 50, which would trigger the EU exit process — claimed “everyone in the country” should be her “biggest fan” for generously using her private fortune to intervene on the issue.
Rather than engage in a “17th-century” debate over the respective rights of Parliament and the crown, the labour movement should assert that “sovereignty has passed to the people as a result of mass campaigns by working-class women and men to secure universal suffrage.
