Evicted Belgravia squatters occupy second mansion

SQUATTERS evicted from a £15 million mansion in central London yesterday morning have occupied a nearby building.

Members of the Autonomous Nation of Anarchist Libertarians (Anal) were evicted from a five-story property owned by Russian oligarch Andrey Goncharenko after a week-long occupation to highlight Britain’s housing crisis.

They entered the building last week and turned it into a temporary homeless shelter for London’s rough-sleepers.

Anal insists that high-end properties should be used for short-term accommodation while they remain empty.

Following a court case on Tuesday which ordered the eviction of the squatters, bailiffs and police arrived at the property at 6am yesterday to turf them out.

After initially attempting to resist the eviction, the squatters agreed to leave peacefully.

A spokesman for Anal said the group would occupy another building close to a “politically important area like this.”

And just hours after the eviction a group of around 20-30 had entered a seven-storey building in Grosvenor Gardens, also in the affluent London area of Belgravia.

A blue plaque noted it was the former home of soldier and archaeologist Lieutenant General Augustus Henry Lane Fox Pitt-Rivers.

The group claimed more people would be joining the occupation.

One activist said: “We are just going to go out and look for homeless people really. We’ll just walk around — they’ll be in doorways or somewhere. It’s a room to stay in isn’t it? Even if they don’t want to stay permanently.”

He said that if they were forced out the group would find another building to occupy.

“There’s empty buildings all over the place, you just don’t know about it,” he said.

Government statistics show that England has around 600,000 empty properties.
