Arsenal were left wondering what they have to do to avoid Europe’s top teams yesterday after once again drawing Bayern Munich in the Champions League knockout stages.

The Gunners topped their group this season and were hoping for an easier draw but were given the best team in the Bundesliga.

The draw is a repeat of their last-16 ties from both 2013 and 2014, both of which saw Arsenal eliminated. The two clubs also met in last season’s group stage.

Had they finished second, as they have the last few seasons, they would have been pitted against Barcelona.

Elsewhere in the competition, Manchester City were drawn against Monaco and Leicester will continue their debut season in the competition against Sevilla.

Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri welcomed the Spanish side, saying: “For us it is a tough but very exciting draw against a team who are used to fighting in Europe,” he said.

“Whoever we played would have been a tough opponent, but I think all the teams who arrived second will have wanted to play against us and I know that we will be the underdogs once again. Always we are underdogs, every time.

“I know that Sevilla have lifted the Europa League three times in three years — it is unbelievable. Now they are third in the league and have lost only three so far. They are a big, big, big team.”

The ties will be played in February and March.
