McDonnell pledges to make millionaires fess up about their tax affairs – and challenges Chancellor to match his policy

LABOUR promised yesterday to pass a law lifting the lid on millionaires’ tax affairs if the party gets into power, in a challenge to the government ahead of next week’s Budget.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell insisted there would be “no place to hide” for tax dodgers under Nordic-style rules which would force anyone earning more than £1 million to comply with a tax transparency and enforcement programme, aimed at curbing tax avoidance.

The Tax Justice Network welcomed the idea. Chief executive Alex Cobham told the Star it was important that high earners make a fair contribution to public funds — and are seen to do so.
