THE Greek ferry workers’ strike entered its fourth day yesterday, with a general strike against EU-dictated austerity measures set for Thursday.

Maritime unions extended their strike, due to end yesterday, for another two days, cutting links to some islands not served by air.

Workers are angry at wage cuts, job losses and income tax rises imposed by the supposedly anti-austerity Syriza government as part of last year’s EU bailout deal, negotiated over the heads of voters who rejected it in a referendum.

Communist trade union front Pame issued a statement in support of its striking comrades, who it said would have to pay almost 54 per cent of their income in taxes under the new measures while shipping firms would enjoy 56 tax exemptions.

Public and private-sector union federations have called a 24-hour nationwide walkout for Thursday.
