Spurs lucky to reach fifth round after late winner

Tottenham 4-3 Wycombe by Samantha Miller at White Hart Lane

Tottenham narrowly avoided an FA cup replay in the dying minutes on Saturday after coming back from 2-0 down to beat Wycombe 4-3 in added time.

Son Heung-min’s 97th minute winner, adding to his earlier strike, guaranteed Spurs a place in the fifth round though a replay would have been fair.

Wycombe piled the pressure on the Premier League home side, scoring an early goal to mark their stamp on the game and went on to put two more goals past second choice goalkeeper Michel Vorm.

Tottenham ended the game with 10 men after Kieren Trippier was forced off through injury, leaving Spurs exposed at the back, after Mauricio Pochetino had used all three substitutions.

Two of the changes added their names to the scoresheet, Dele Alli with an individual effort and Vincent Jansen scoring yet another penalty for the club since joining in the summer, although he is yet to score from open play.

With Mousa Dembele saying after the final whistle that Tottenham “want to win the FA cup,” Spurs will now be looking to go all the way and add a trophy to their cabinet.

Wycombe striker Adebayo Akinfenwa expressed his feelings after losing in such a cruel way, saying: “We’re disappointed. We know the quality they’ve got but to lose it in the last kick of the game, it’s devastating.

“We did say that as long as we show what we can do and give a good account of ourselves, we weren’t fazed or intimidated by Tottenham.”

Wycombe captain Paul Hayes said: “We hold our heads up high, we scored three goals at White Hart Lane. It’s surreal going 2-0 up at White Hart Lane.

“I’m proud of every single one of the lads. I had three chances and scored two of them.”

The pain of losing at such a late stage in the game was tough for the captain but that’s not the only pain Hayes will carry. The striker has a longterm Achilles injury but said his mental strength pushes him through it.

“I’m playing through pain all the time but I’m a strong character.”
