TORIES are “playing Fagin” in an underhand assault on rail workers’ pensions, union leaders warned yesterday.
The railway pension scheme is set to be streamlined into the new single state pension programme as part of the Con-Dem’s austerity agenda — meaning workers and hard-pressed pensioners will have to stump up even more in national insurance stamps.
The proposed increases range from £56 for a worker earning £12,000 a year to £448 for those earning £40,000 and above.
In a joint letter, the RMT’s Mick Cash, Aslef’s Mick Whelan, TSSA’s Manuel Cortes and Unite’s Len McCluskey accuse the government of “raiding workers’ pensions to fund tax cuts for the rich.
“It’s not fair, and it’s not right, that ordinary working men and women will end up footing the bill.
“We are not going to stand idly by and watch our pensions being plundered to fund their private profits.”
