BORN in Prague in 1947, the bass virtuoso Miroslav Vitous won a scholarship to Boston’s Berklee College of Music while studying music at the Prague Conservatory. He moved to New York in 1967 and began playing with some of jazz’s stellar names — from Freddie Hubbard to Miles Davis and saxophonist Wayne Shorter.
It was with Shorter and the Viennese expatriate Joe Zawinul that he founded the outstanding fusion band Weather Report in 1971, playing on some of their early and most groundbreaking albums like I Sing the Body Electric, Sweetnighter and Mysterious Traveller.
