A YOUNG man has become the third British person to be killed fighting alongside Kurdish forces against the Isis death cult in Syria.

Ryan Lock, a 20-year-old chef from Chichester, West Sussex, reportedly died in the struggle to regain the Syrian city of Raqqa on December 21.

Mr Lock, who was given the Kurdish name Berxwedan Givara, is said to have joined the People’s Protection Units (YPG) militia as a volunteer in September.

His father described him as a “very caring and loving boy who would do anything to help anyone. He had a heart of gold.”

The YPG told his family that he had died along with four other fighters and paid tribute to Mr Lock’s bravery.

A statement said: “Ryan was not only a fighter providing additional force to our struggle.

“In fact, with his experience and knowledge, he has been an example for younger fighters … Ryan has served the purpose of a very important bridge between us, the Kurds of Rojava.

“He crossed continents for the destiny of our people and humanity.”

British YPG volunteer Macer Gifford said: “While our governments send their platitudes and endless sympathies, Ryan went and put himself between Isis and the innocent people of Rojava.

“There is nothing stronger or more pure than the heart of a volunteer.”

Mr Lock is the third British man to die fighting Isis with the Syrian Kurds.

Dairy farmer Dean Evans, 22, from Reading, was killed in July last year and former royal marine Konstandinos Erik Scurfield, 25, from Barnsley, lost his life in March 2015.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “The UK has advised for some time against all travel to Syria. Anyone who does travel to these areas, for whatever reason, is putting themselves in danger.”
