Tusk claims hated EU-Canada trade deal still on the cards

EU PRESIDENT Donald Tusk claimed yesterday an anti-democratic trade deal with Canada could still be signed today while last-minute talks were held with Belgium’s Wallonia region.

He told MEPs “the summit tomorrow is still possible” after days of talks in Brussels between the national government and its regions appeared to be heading for a breakthrough.

Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders said during a break in talks “all necessary documents” could be sent to EU officials later yesterday for a final vetting among member states.

Wallonia’s Minister-President Paul Magnette announced that some details still need to be clarified.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was still ready to come over to Brussels for today’s summit and official signature of Ceta — the EU-Canada free trade deal.

But without rapid agreement from Wallonia the summit could be scrapped.
