Albania: US envoy leans on MPs to bend to EU demands

US AMBASSADOR to Albania Donald Lu threatened MPs with “grave and long-term” consequences if they did not back EU-demanded changes to the judicial system.

“There will be specific negative repercussions from the US on those political leaders who vote against this reform,” Mr Lu told a civil society rally at the parliament offices.

Mr Lu’s threats came a day after EU parliamentary foreign affairs committee member Knut Fleckenstein warned Tirana that failure to pass the Brussels-dictated laws would jeopardise Albania’s bid for EU membership.
