Colombia: Farc and government ask for UN observers

PEACE talks between the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc) and the government took a step forward on Tuesday as the UN was asked to oversee the disarmament process.

Negotiators for the two sides announced at Cuban-brokered peace talks in Havana that the 12-month mission would be made up of unarmed observers from Latin American and Caribbean nations.

It would monitor adherence to an eventual bilateral ceasefire and resolve disputes that emerge from the expected demobilisation of around 7,000 Farc guerillas.
