SHADOW rail minister Andy McDonald underlined the Labour Party’s determination to bring Britain’s railways back into public ownership yesterday during a barnstorming speech at Aslef’s annual conference.
The Middlesbrough MP spoke of his delight at being asked by leader Jeremy Corbyn to shape Labour’s rail policy, describing it as “one of the best briefs in politics.”
He said: “Jeremy, as you know, is a complete rail enthusiast and we are both determined to campaign for a fully integrated, publicly owned railway, to fight job cuts and to campaign for cheaper fares and better services.
If we can tackle the big issues, like delivering decent public services and affordable state-built and owned housing by making the richest pay a fair amount of tax, Labour can win back the trust and support of the electorate, argues ANDY McDONALD MP
