THE last time that I heard the marvellously versatile multi-reedman Julian Arguelles, he was a part of Kenny Wheeler’s Big Band (Martin France and John Taylor were playing also), blowing a baritone saxophone as big as himself.

On this vibrant album, he plays a joke on his listeners too — in the sleeve photo standing on a step beside his luminous and much taller bandmates, pianist John Taylor, bassist Dave Holland and drummer Martin France, from Manchester, Wolverhampton and Kent respectively.
