Anti-arms activists protest outside arms factories across Britain against government's role in Yemen war

ANTI-ARMS activists staged protests outside arms factories and military sites across Britain on Saturday to draw attention to Britain’s role in the war on Yemen.

The national day of solidarity with Yemen, organised by Campaign Against the Arms Trade, saw small demos take place in Preston, Southampton, Brighton, Bristol and North Wales.

Organisers said they wanted to “illuminate” the fact that “arms companies fuelling the war on Yemen exist in our communities.”

Students with the Demilitarise Lancaster campaign held a demo outside the BAE Systems factory in Warton, the main assembly site for Typhoons, the most advanced fighter jets used by Saudi Arabia in Yemen.

In Wales, peace campaigners gathered in RAF Valley, Anglesey, where Saudi pilots have been trained.

One of the protesters, Awel Irene, who is the co-ordinator of Wales peace group Cymdeithas y Cymod, said in comments to the Nation.Cymru: “We do not believe that there is room for Wales to have a role in creating weapons control systems that attack the innocent people of Yemen.”

The British government had sold at least £23 billion worth of arms to Saudi Arabia since it began bombing Yemen eight years ago, according to Caat.
