Former Commons speaker Betty Boothroyd dies aged 93
TRIBUTES have been paid to former Commons speaker Betty Boothroyd today who has died at 93.
Lady Boothroyd became the first woman to be elected speaker in the more than 700-year history of the role in April 1992, staying on until October 2000.
She later entered the Lords as a crossbench peer in January 2001 until her death on Sunday.
