Greenpeace says protest at Sunak’s home was ‘proportionate’ to his ‘disastrous decision’

GREENPEACE have said that its anti-oil protest at Rishi Sunak’s manor was a “proportionate response to the disastrous decision” by the Prime Minister.

Areeba Hamid, the charity’s co-executive director, said Mr Sunak must be held to account for deciding to “max out” Britain’s oil and gas reserves by granting more than 100 new licences for extraction in the North Sea.

She told Sky News: “I think the point that we want to make is, Rishi Sunak needs to be held accountable for this decision and we need to hold politicians accountable when they make terrible decisions like these.”

Greenpeace added the group has received an equal number of comments in support as against online and it had planned its protest “carefully and meticulously” — and would not have done it if Rishi Sunak or members of his family were there.

Three men and two women, who were arrested after his grade II-listed North Yorkshire constituency home was draped in an oil-black fabric while Mr Sunak and his family are on holiday on Thursday, have been released on bail.

Environment Secretary Therese Coffey has reportedly told the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to disengage with the campaign group.

Greenpeace UK co-executive director Will McCallum said that “this isn’t about the government engaging with Greenpeace” but about drawing attention to the “climate crisis.”

Jon Fuller, of Extinction Rebellion, told LBC that people should be “proud” of the Greenpeace protest after North Yorkshire Police faced a backlash over the “major security breach.”

Health minister Maria Caulfield refused to comment on the Prime Minister’s security arrangements today but said security for MPs is “always a concern.”
