Labour's left demands an end to US economic blockade of Cuba

LABOUR leftwingers have demanded an end to the US economic blockade of Cuba, warning that serious shortages of food, medicine and power supplies are causing “real suffering.”

In a statement today, the party’s Socialist Campaign Group (SCG) called on US President Joe Biden to honour his campaign promises and end six decades of punitive measures to help Cubans fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

The group, which includes former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and ex-shadow home secretary Diane Abbott, also slammed “dangerous and disingenuous” demands for foreign intervention on the socialist Caribbean island.

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez called on Wednesday for US forces to add to their history of so-called “humanitarian” incursions around the world by bombing Havana to force regime change.

The SCG statement said: “The current situation in Cuba is the result of the ongoing US blockade, the additional 243 sanctions imposed by [former US president Donald] Trump, and the impact of the pandemic.

“The quickest and easiest intervention would be for the US to lift its unilaterally imposed and inhumane blockade.”
