Memorial bid for activist turned fighter Campbell

A FRIEND of fallen revolutionary Anna Campbell has launched a petition calling on Sheffield City Council to erect a memorial plaque in her honour.

Ms Campbell studied at Sheffield University and later served with the Kurdish Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) under the nom de guerre Helin Qerecox.

She was killed last March aged 27 while fighting off a Turkish assault on the Kurdish city of Afrin.

The petition proposes that a plaque is installed at the Sheffield Peace Gardens, next to an International Brigades memorial for those who fought fascism in the Spanish civil war.

The appeal notes: “Anna came to Sheffield in 2010 to study at the University of Sheffield.

“As a student, she was active in the fight against the coalition government’s proposal to triple tuition fees, along with other causes rooted in animal rights, social justice and the pursuit of human dignity.”

The petition is open until March 11 and can only be signed by people who live, work or study in Sheffield.
