Over 700 jobs at risk after Anglesey factory announces closure

A CAMPAIGN to save hundreds of jobs at a chicken processing plant in Wales was launched by Unite today.

The announcement that the Two Sisters in Llangefni, Anglesey, will close with the loss of 730 jobs was greeted with anger by the union and politicians.

The company, which has factories across Britain, is one of the largest employers on the island of Anglesey.

Unite Wales regional secretary Peter Hughes said: “To say that our members are outraged at the way they have been treated is an understatement.

“Unite will fight to reverse this decision and every possibility of reversing it will be explored.

“We intend to force the company to reconsider and we will demand that the Welsh government joins the campaign to save the plant.”

Poultry giant Two Sisters Food Group said that the site was old and would require significant investment to bring it up to the same standard as its other locations.

The firm also said that Llangefni was one of its smallest sites and products could be made more efficiently elsewhere.

“The company has dropped this bombshell on its workforce without consultation and without any notice whatsoever,” Mr Hughes said.

“We believe that there’s viable employment here. They’re making a profit, so ultimately there should be jobs on Anglesey.”

Plaid Cymru’s Senedd Member for Anglesey Rhun ap Iorwerth tabled an emergency question to the Welsh Parliament about the closure.

He took to social media and pledged to fight to help the workforce.

Economy Minister Vaughan Gething has been in contact with Unite and the company to discuss the closure plans.

Welsh Labour Senedd Member for North Wales Carolyn Thomas said: “The impact will be massive in an area with little alternative employment.

“It has been suggested that a task group will be set up which I have been asked to be part of.”

The island of Anglesey has been badly hit by the closure of the Menai bridge for maintenance and uncertainty about plans to build a new nuclear plant at Wylfa.
