Places of worship able to register for protection

RELIGIOUS groups can now register for a government scheme to protect places of worship in the wake of the Christchurch mosque massacre.

The Home Office announced yesterday that religious organisations can register for the latest round of its Places of Worship Protective Security Scheme, although applications will not open until July.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid said: “In the coming days and weeks, millions of people from different faiths will be marking religious festivals up and down the UK.

“At this time of reflection, devotion and celebration, it’s vital everyone feels safe and protected in the places of worship they attend.”

Christians, Jews and Muslims are preparing to celebrate Easter, Passover and Ramadan — which all fall within the space of a few weeks this year.

Akeela Gheewalla Ahmed, chair of the Anti-Muslim Hatred Working Group, said she welcomed “the improvements to the places of worship fund and the initiative to help mosques to take steps to improve their security during Ramadan.”

The scheme has awarded over £1.5 million in 134 grants to help secure places of worship since 2016.

Its fourth year will see £1.6 million available to applicants.

The level of investment has been stepped up since 50 Muslims were murdered at mosques in New Zealand by a white supremacist terrorist.

Minister for Counter-Extremism Baroness Williams said: “No-one should be abused or attacked because of their faith.

“The government is committed to not only pursuing perpetrators of these horrendous crimes but also protecting victims.”
