RMT threatens to name and shame corrupt bosses

THE RMT threatened to “name and shame” exploitative bosses on Britain’s railways yesterday, exposing a cleaning company’s contract with a major train operator.

Churchill, which supplies workers to clean Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) trains, encourages a “brutal” culture of bullying and intimidation in its workplaces, the rail union said.

Individual trade unionists are being “picked off” by the company in an attempt to victimise union members, RMT also claimed, adding that managers were allowed to get away with “flagrant breaches” of workplace disciplinary procedures.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said that the union was taking a “collective case” against Churchill, and has demanded that GTR address their concerns.

“RMT has always called out the bad bosses on Britain’s railways and today we are stepping up that campaign, starting with the appalling and brutal practices of Churchill’s on their Govia Thameslink cleaning contract,” he said.

“We are not letting the client companies, in this case GTR, off the hook either.

“They cannot simply turn a blind eye to the shocking abuses that are taking place on their services under the direction of their contractors. We expect them to call their suppliers to account for flagrant violation of rights and procedures that are taking place on their watch.

“RMT is taking a collective case against Churchill’s on behalf of our members and there will be no quarter given by this union as we stand up and fight for basic workplace justice.”

Churchill did not respond to the Morning Star’s request for comment.
