Royal Parks' outsourced cleaners to strike over working conditions

OUTSOURCED cleaners at the Royal Parks in London are launching a two-week strike on Monday to demand the same conditions as their in-house colleagues.

Members of public services union PCS and United Voices of the World (UVW) are also striking against possible redundancies of up to 30 per cent.

Employed by outsource firm Just Ask, cleaners maintaining the prestigious landmarks, including Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, are demanding parity on sick pay, maternity pay, annual leave and pension entitlements as those directly employed by Royal Parks.

Royal Parks cleaner Joe Attoh said: “They have to treat us as equals, we are not asking too much, just what we deserve.”

The strike comes after Just Ask requested PCS and UVW to postpone the strike on Monday to give them time to work out future staffing plans.

But workers voted to go ahead with strike, saying they believed bosses wanted to delay the action as a ploy to get cleaners working through the busiest time of the year.

UVW is calling for people to support strikers on the picket at 9.30am at the Royal Parks HQ on Monday.
