Scottish government under fire over £6.6M arts budget cuts

THE Scottish government cutting £6.6 million from the funding of Creative Scotland risks “pushing the arts further out of reach of the majority,” campaigners warned today,

Earlier plans by the SNP-Green coalition to cut the amount were abandoned in February following pressure from more than 15,000 Campaign for the Arts supporters.

But the 10 per cent cut has now been confirmed as part of the government’s autumn budget revisions.

Creative Scotland described the cuts as “extremely disappointing.”

Musicians Union regional chairman Ben Lunn told the Star: “It is outrageous and will have such widespread damage on the cultural sector that had already been stretched to breaking point.

“This move will force Creative Scotland to either underfund or completely abandon many important organisations and, in turn, force them to fold entirely or resort to private backing, pushing the arts further out of reach of the majority of people in Scotland.”

Culture Secretary Angus Robertson said: “The Scottish government has an obligation to balance the budget each year and prioritise funding to deliver the best value for every taxpayer in Scotland.”
