Scottish government urged to enshrine human right to a healthy environment into law

ENVIRONMENTAL groups have welcomed a recommendation to enshrine the human right to a healthy environment in Scots law.

The Scottish government’s National Taskforce for Human Rights Leadership published detailed proposals for a new human rights law today, recommending the tabling of legislation in the next parliamentary session.

The SNP, which look likely to retain power in May’s Scottish Parliament elections, has agreed to incorporate the taskforce’s 30 recommendations, including the right to a healthy environment.

Campaigners believe that the creation of the legal right will support citizens demanding improvements and urge politicians to address the climate and nature emergency.

Environmental Rights Centre for Scotland advocacy officer Emilia Hanna said: “Everyone in Scotland deserves to live in a safe, clean and healthy environment.

“A human right to a healthy environment is a positive way to tackle the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the climate crisis.”
