SNP urged to create thousands of eco-jobs

SCOTTISH Greens co-leader Lorna Slater has demanded that the SNP government ensure that workers benefit from the green employment potential north of the border.

She called on ministers in Edinburgh to take advantage of the country’s huge renewable energy potential to deliver thousands of good-quality, well-paid, unionised jobs in the sector.

Ms Slater, an engineer who is currently project-managing the construction of a tidal turbine in Dundee, said that Scotland “already has the skills to be a world leader.”

But rather than creating green jobs and apprenticeships, the Scottish government’s approach to date has resulted in “many of these supply chain jobs going overseas,” the Greens co-leader said.

“Tackling the climate emergency is the biggest challenge facing humanity, but it presents opportunities too,” she added.

“Scotland can lead a fair transition from the age of oil and gas to a cleaner, greener future and we can do so in a way that empowers workers and communities.”
