Spineless Sunak's failure to sack Braverman emboldens fascists on Armistice Day, campaigners say

RISHI SUNAK’S humiliating failure to sack Suella Braverman has emboldened fascists to attack protesters calling for a Gaza ceasefire on Armistice Day, campaigners have warned.

The prime minister was branded spineless by Labour after he insisted he still had full confidence in his home secretary following her incendiary claims that police were “playing favourites” with pro-Palestinians.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt refused to back Ms Braverman today as Downing Street said it had not cleared her remarks, which were published in the Times on Wednesday.

Former attorney general Dominic Grieve and justice committee chairman Sir Bob Neill said her position is “untenable.”

Senior officers and the head of the Crown Prosecution Service also stressed the need for the police to be able to operate independently without political interference.

Palestine Solidarity Campaign director Ben Jamal said: "The Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s comments are further evidence of her unfitness for office.

“Rishi Sunak bears responsibility for her being in office and for his own irresponsible remarks which have added to a climate of division and green-lit far-right activists seeking to disrupt people’s right to protest.

“Hundreds of thousands of people will ignore these efforts at intimidation and march for peace and justice on November 11.”

Refugee charity Care4Calais CEO Steve Smith said Ms Braverman — who has recently described using a tent as a “lifestyle choice” for homeless people — should have been sacked “a long time ago.”

“The prime minister’s failure to act makes him complicit in this hate, and they will make them jointly responsible should far-right hate turn into violence on our streets, like we saw at the riot outside an asylum hotel in Knowsley earlier this year,” he added.

Sabby Dhalu from Stand up to Racism said the home secretary’s comments were “totally inaccurate as well as inflammatory and emboldening fascists.

“Fascist and far-right demonstrators have violently and savagely attacked police officers, and been allowed to proceed with further demonstrations,” she said.

“Braverman has to go. However this is not enough. This government must go.”

Labour MP Zarah Sultana said: “Suella Braverman has whipped up more hate and division than perhaps any other MP.”

It is thought Mr Sunak may wait for the Supreme Court to rule on Ms Braverman’s plans to deport asylum-seekers next week before deciding whether to sack her.
