Students launch fresh campaign to cancel rent before face-to-face teaching resumes

STUDENT tenants in Scotland launched a fresh campaign today demanding a cancellation of rent until face-to-face teaching resumes.

The Union of Scottish Student Tenant Unions (USSTU) announced its Listen to Students: Cancel Rent campaign to demand that universities, landlords and the government stop trying to pass the buck.

A survey by the National Union of Students (NUS) earlier this week found almost three-quarters of students are concerned about managing financially during the pandemic.

The USSTU has outlined a list of demands including a cancellation of rent until teaching resumes after the ongoing lockdown.

The group has also said that the government must remove the burden of rent from students with a “rent relief model” and the opening of hardship funds.

Universities must also protect international students by providing guarantees to avoid having to pay rent up front, the group said, alongside a commitment to ensure the voices of student tenants are considered alongside landlords.
