TUC 21 COVID-19: NASUWT warns disadvantaged youth have experienced greatest loss and inequality

DISADVANTAGED children have experienced the greatest loss and inequality during the Covid-19 pandemic, TUC Congress heard today.

Teachers’ union NASUWT called on Tory ministers to support teachers as they help pupils recover from months of lost learning, by investing in schools and the education workforce.

The call came as part of a composite motion calling for a post-pandemic plan for all public services, moved by Unison, which passed without opposition.

Demanding action, NASUWT general secretary Dr Patrick Roach told delegates that the crisis had “further exposed the widening inequalities in our society.

“So often it is children in our most disadvantaged communities who have been the most affected from the disruption to education.

“While the education workforce has responded brilliantly in helping children recover, the government has not delivered on the investment needed.”

NASUWT motions demanding fair pay and pensions for public-sector workers as well as a “substantial funding boost” for austerity-hit watchdogs such as the Health & Safety Executive were also passed.
