Welsh news in brief: June 27, 2023

TORY CHAOS: Local politicians today slammed a Westminster government decision to move up to 240 asylum-seekers into a 70-bed hotel in Llanelli on July 10.

Senedd member Lee Waters said that the proposal to house people waiting to have their claim for asylum in the Stradey Park hotel is a bad idea.

He said that it ignored local concerns and was without the agreement of the Welsh government, the council, the health board or police.

LOCKDOWN PARTY: Tory MP for Ynys Mon Virginia Crosbie has apologised for attending birthday drinks at an event in Parliament on December 8 2020 while Covid restrictions were in place.

Ms Crosbie is a former parliamentary private secretary to ex-health secretary Matt Hancock.

The event was highlighted by former prime minister Boris Johnson when he accused privileges committee member Sir Bernard Jenkin of attending the event with his wife.

STRIKE PAUSE: Royal College of Nursing Wales today paused its strikes on July 12-13 after securing formal talks with the Welsh government to discuss non-pay elements of the pay award announced last month.

The union has also suspended its ballot due to open on July 3. RCN Wales members rejected the latest pay offer from the Welsh government, which was implemented after the majority of other health unions accepted it.

FM QUESTIONS: Former Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price asked about compulsory voter participation in Welsh elections and sought a pledge from Mark Drakeford to commission research on its use in other countries.

The First Minister said that now is the time to start that debate and would discuss with Consul General Mick Antoniw about commissioning research.

Mr Drakeford also said that the debate would start in Wednesday’s debate on Mr Price’s draft Bill on a civic duty to vote.
