Dentists handed real-terms pay cut

DENTISTS have been handed a real-terms pay cut, the British Dental Association reported today.

Contract holders are set to receive an increase of 4.64 per cent, backdated to April 2024 — going against the 6 per cent recommended by the Doctors and Dentists Review Body.

Only 1.68 per cent has been allocated for practice expenses.

The BDA highlights that with dental inflation estimated at 9.2 per cent, this will amount to a significant funding cut.

It estimated that utilities costs have increased by 10 per cent, staffing costs 15 per cent and laboratory costs by 16.5 per cent.

The BDA delivered a petition signed by over 250,000 supporters to Downing Street on Tuesday, calling for proper funding for NHS dentistry.

BDA General Dental Practice Committee chairman Shawn Charlwood said: “Wes Streeting recognised NHS dentistry is at death’s door.

“Handing dentists a pay cut after record breaking delays won’t change that prognosis.

“These cuts will come at a high price in goodwill that is now in short supply.”
