Women's Football Double winners Chelsea sign veteran Riley

WOMEN’S Super League and FA Cup champions Chelsea strengthened their side yesterday after agreeing a deal with FC Rosengard for defender Ali Riley.

The 30-year-old New Zealand international signed a two-year deal, though she will remain with the Swedish club until the mid-season in the middle of July.

“Life is short and you never know how long you can have a career as a football player,” said Riley. “I feel that I have to take this opportunity to challenge myself and play for a club that is one of the world’s largest football brands.

“I love this club and everything we stand for both on and off the plane. I’ve been developing extremely much as a player and person during my time here and I’m very grateful for everything the club has given me.

“This was not an easy decision because FC Rosengard is definitely one of Europe’s best teams and will do well with the players we have and under [Jona Eidevall’s] leadership.”

Riley refused to rule out a return to Rosengard at the end of her career.

“It would be a dream to come back and finish my career here or work for the club [otherwise]. I’m looking forward to a new adventure, but first, it’s full focus on our last matches before the breakdown.”

Rosengard sports director Therese Sjogran heaped praise on the defender, saying: “Ali joined FC Rosengard in 2012 and contributed greatly to our three SM Gold and three Cup Gold during her time here.

“Ali has now decided to take the next step in his career. Chelsea will get a player with a big heart and an attitude that all teams had benefited from. We wish Ali good luck and, who knows, maybe our paths will cross again in the future.”
